On January 1, 2025, the People's Champion Tournament was explained by its organizer, otistdog, as follows:
The purpose of this tournament is simple: To promote play and discussion of games that aren’t necessarily well-known. Over its course, forum members will determine a game from among 64 contestants they have nominated as the best one to earn the title of “People’s Champion.”[1]
The event began with forum members nominating games to be in the tournament. Of the nominated games, 64 were selected by a lottery to compete in the tournament. These 64 games were paired up to compete against each other in matches. In each match, forum members who had tried both games voted on which of the two was better.
